Saturday, February 27, 2010 MiPHS charter member Leonard Walle presented a lecture entitled, "Chasing the Light: 19th Century Astronomical Photography," at the Clements Library of the University of Michigan.
Sunday, November 22, 2009 MiPHS Double Feature at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor. Carole McNamara, Senior Curator of Western Art, gave us a guided tour of the exhibits, "The Lens of Impressionism: Photography and Painting along the Normandy Coast" and "The Image Wrought,: Historical Photographic Approaches in the Digital Age."
Sunday, October 25, 2009 The MiPHS Annual Photographica Show and Sale was held at a new location this year: the Royal Oaks Elks Hall, 2401 E. Fourth Street, just south of 11 Mile and west of I-75. Attendance was about 200.
Saturday, April 18, 2009 Chris Sneberger was the speaker at the MiPHS Annual Dinner & Presentation at the Birmingham Athletic Club.
Friday & Saturday, April 17 & 18, 2009 MiPHS co-sponsored the 51st annual conference, "Michigan in Perspective: the Local History" which was held at the McGregor Conference Center on the Wayne State University campus.
Saturday, February 28, 2009 Doug Aikenhead gave a lecture titled: "The World in Your Mailbox: Real Photo Postcards from the Early 20th Century” at the University of Michigan’s William L. Clements Library in Ann Arbor.
Sunday, October 26, 2008 Our annual Photographica Show & Sale was held at the Novi Community Center
Friday, September 12, 2008 Our meeting this evening was held in conjunction with the opening of an exhibit at the Argus Museum. The exhibit showcased comtemporary photographs taken with vintage cameras by the members of the Ann Arbor Area Crappy Camera Club.
Saturday, June 7, 2008 We enjoyed a special Double Presentation by MiPHS Members at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. Dietmar Haenchen spoke on, "Significant Development in 35mm Still Cameras." Mark O'Brien followed with, "Get your Film Camera out of the Closet and Shoot some Film: The Highs and Lows of 35mm."
Saturday, April 5, 2008 At the Annual MiPHS Dinner and Lecture at the Birmingham Athletic Club, our speaker was Matthew Isenburg on the topic, "The Business Side of Photography."
Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 Doug price gave a presentation on "The Photographically Illustrated Book, 1860-1950" at the U-M's Clements Library in Ann Arbor.
Sunday, November 11, 2007 "Snaps to Snips" (A History of Early Photographic Processes
Silhouettes, Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes and Tin Types) was presented by MiPHS member Judith Harrison Kalter at the
Carriage House of the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society in Pontiac.
Sunday, October 14, 2007 Our 36th Annual Trade Show was held at the Novi Civic Center.
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Wally Jung gave a presentation on the "History of the House of David Religious Colony in Benton Harbor MI" at the Royal Oak Senior Community Center.
Thursday, May 17, 2007 Chris Mahoney, senior vice president of photos at Sotheby's, spoke to us about the current photography market at the Detroit Institute of Arts. His talk coincided with a DIA exhibit on Ansel Adams.
Saturday, March 24, 2007 MiPHS Annual Dinner and Lecture at the Birmingham Athletic Club. Our speaker was Gordon Brown. His talk, "Photography BC & AD: Before Computers & After Digital,” was a history of the digital camera.
Saturday, March 3, 2007 Photographic Sale & Auction in Dearborn Heights to help settle a late member's estate. For sale were cameras, cameras and more cameras, lots of technical & photography books, enlargers, darkroom equipment, cabinet cards, cartes des visite. tintypes, cased images, albums, a set of American Annual of Photography, Mortensen books, clarinet, flute, piccolo, tuba, guitar and an electronic keyboard.
Note: Most items were sold that day but remaining items will be available again at the Annual Trade Show in Novi on October 14.
January 20, 2007 William J. Christen, author of "Pauline Cushman: Spy of the Cumberland." presented a lecture on his book at the Birmingham Historical Museum.
Sunday, November 5, 2006 Our 35th Annual Trade Show was held at the Novi Civic Center.
Saturday, October 14, 2006 MiPHS participated in a workshop on the care and preservation of photos at the Oakland County Historical Commission. The event was held at Spicer House in Farmington Hills.
Saturday, September 30, 2006 "Michigan's Family Album." Members (and friends) of MiPHS members met at the Michigan Historical Museum in the Michigan Library and Historical Center in Lansing. On display were photographs from Dave Tinder's collection, which illustrate life in Michigan during the period 1860-1930.
Saturday, May 20, 2006 About two dozen MiPHS members and guests visited two U of M institutions, the Clements Library & the Museum of Art. The Clements Library graciously opened on a Saturday when they're usually closed. (Thank you Clayton Lewis!) The exhibit we will saw was "Colonial Photography---Viewfinder on the Past". We then we will take a short walk to the U of M Art Museum and view "Rethinking the Photographic Image: The Best of Photography from the George Eastman House Collection". Afterwards, many of us took a walk through the scenic Law Quad and had an enjoyable lunch at Dominick's.
Saturday, April 1, 2006 "Women in Pants" was the theme for our annual dinner and lecture. The program was presented by Catherine Smith and Cynthia Grieg. They co-authored the book "Women in Pants: Manly Maidens, Cowgirls and Other Renegades" (New York: Harry N. Abrams, 2003).
The event was held at the Birmingham Athletic Club.
February 18, 2006 "I Hear America Singing," a lecture celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the American Tintype was presented by Janice G. Schimmelman in the Meadowbrook Art Gallery of Oakland University in Rochester. The event was co-sponsored by OU's Dept. of Art and Art History.
October 23, 2005 Our 34th Annual Trade Show was held at the Novi Community Center.
September 24, 2005 "Of One Cloth - The Business, Science and Art of 19th Century Photography," a lecture by James S. Jensen was held in Wilson Hall in the Meadowbrook Art Gallery of Oakland University in Rochester.

"Tour of the Argus Museum in Ann Arbor." The facility is located at 535 West William Street. Our guide was MiPHS member Mark O'Brien.
April 9, 2005 For the annual dinner meeting in April, we had Rob Cox, Head of Special Collections and Maps, W.E.B. Dubois Library, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He spoke on 19th-century photography as covered in his book, Body and Soul: A Sympathetic History of American Spiritualism. The event was held at the Birmingham Athletic Club, 4023 W. Maple Road , Bloomfield Hills, MI. There was also a silent auction to benefit the Society.
March 12, 2005 James Donaldson presented, "When Today Becomes Yesterday: History and Art in Photo Postcards of the Lake Huron Shore." The meeting was held at the Royal Oak Senior Community Center, 3500 Marais (off 13 Mile between Crooks and N. Main) in Royal Oak. Jim discussed the postcards made by A.J. Bradshaw and his successor Fred Stevens from 1905 to 1935. An optional lunch followed the meeting.
October 24, 2004 33rd Annual MiPHS Photographica Trade Show at the Novi Community Center.
September 25, 2004 Visit to the Columbus (OH) Museum of Art. Nine members and friends toured, "Photo Exhibition: Family Album: The James Rutkowski Collection of American Photographs."
September 11, 2004 Visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Over two dozen members and friends viewed the Photography of Charles Sheeler: American Modernist.
July 24, 2004 Outdoor Photo Fair & Trade Show at Dave's Photo Emporium in Ann Arbor. This new Society event was on the last day of the Art Fair.  Attendance was good, the weather was beautiful and quite a bit of mediocre equipment was sold at minimal prices.
May 1, 2004 Field Trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art. MiPHS members saw the exhibition, "Time Stands Still: Muybridge and the Instantaneous Photography Movement."
April 24, 2004 Annual Richard G. Burns Memorial Lecture, Dinner and Silent Auction.  We were treated to a daguerreotype demonstration and lecture by Mike Robinson.
Feb. 7, 2004 "Mystery Cameras at the Henry Ford." The Henry Ford collections took advantage of the expertise of some twenty members to identify a number of their cameras that go back to the 1840's.

  

November 2, 2003 32nd Annual MiPHS Trade Show in Novi
October 11, 2003 Gallery Talk by Claude Baillargeon, Ass't Professor of Art History at Oakland University, in connection with the exhibition: "Dickensian London and Photographic Imagination, 1851-1881" at the Meadowbrook Gallery. The exhibition runs (October 10-November 16).
June 28, 2003 Auction Sale: Pieronek estate items and collectors' image consignments were sold at the Holiday Inn of Troy.

April 26, 2003 Annual Dinner Meeting at the Big Fish II in Madison Heights. Our speaker was Jim Secreto talking about the history of automobile advertising photography. It was the 5th annual Richard G. Burns Memorial Lecture.
April 1, 2003 Len Walle, a charter member of MiPHS, spoke on 19th century astronomical photography at the University of Michigan Observatory in Ann Arbor.
Jan. 25, 200 The Society helped liquidate the 75 year old Pieronek Studio in Hamtramck. An auction is planned for the summer.
Nov. 3, 2002  Our 31st Annual Trade Show was held at the Novi Community Center under the auspices of the Novi Camera Club. Click here for a few photos.

Sept. 19, 2002 "Using the Speed Graphic." Grosse Pointe Farms photographer Carl Meyering discussed his career and passion for Speed Graphic cameras.
June 6, 2002 Bill Rauhaser displayed and discussed his Leica collection and how he went about assembling it.
Congratulations! Four charter members of MiPHS have been granted life memberships for their 30 years of service. Gene and George O'Neal have been running our trade shows and Gene has also been our secretary for 15 years. John Naslanic is a past president and has been the newsletter editor for the past 78 issues. Andee Seeger is a recent past president and has served on other board posts. Thanks to all of them from the rest of us members!
April 13, 2002 This meeting was our Annual Dinner Meeting. Professor Robert Bogdan of Syracuse University spoke on "Real Photo Postcards" as the fourth annual Richard G. Burns Memorial Lecture. The event was held at the Big Fish Too in Madison Heights.
March 16, 2002 Jan Schimmelman, MiPHS board member, gave a lecture entitled, "The Great American Tintype Revisited" in the Meadowbrook Art Gallery.
February 12, 2002  "A Conversation with Sam Vinegar" was this evening's event. Sam operates a local shop specializing in photographica and promotes trade shows throughout the midwest and beyond. A mini-swap meet was also held as a part of the meeting.
November 4, 2001  The 30th Annual Photographica Trade Show was held at the Novi Community Center.
 September 22, 2001 "Photographers to the World: The Detroit Publishing Company." Cynthia Read-Miller arranged for the MiPHS to visit the Research Center of the Henry Ford Museum to see and hear how an exhibition is put together, plus a gallery talk with the exhibition. September 14-16, 2001 Collodion Conference at the George Eastman House in Rochester NY. MiPHS members Janice Schimmelman and James Jensen were among eight scheduled speakers on the wet-plate process. May 19, 2001   "The Detroit News Photographic Collection" by Tom Featherstone of the Walter P. Reuther Library was held on the Wayne State campus. The Reuther Library is the recent recipient of the Detroit News' photographic negatives from approximately 1905 to 1982. The library is located at 5401 Cass at Kirby. Click here for a map.
April 28, 2001 Our Annual Dinner Meeting was held at Ernesto's Country Inn in Plymouth. The Richard G. Burns Memorial Lecture was presented by Derrick Gee of the Detroit Stereographic Society on the history of 3-D photography.
January 10, 2001 We held a joint meeting with the Detroit Stereographic Society. The program was "A History of 3-D Movies" and was held at Livonia Senior Center
December 10, 2000 The Society visited the IMAX Theater at the Henry Ford Museum. We joined the Detroit Stereographic Society for the showing of "Cirque de Soleil: Journey of Man" in 3-D.

Note: One of the sixteen speakers was MiPHS member Janice Schimmelman, Professor of Art History and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Oakland University. Her topic was "The Iron Plate in American Photography," the invention and development of the "Tintype" 1853-1880.

"Hidden Witness: African American Images from the Dawn of Photography to the Civil War." Jackie Napolean Wilson presented a slide lecture in the Meadow Brook Art Gallery on the campus of Oakland University.
September 23, 2000 "Focus on eBay." Member Tom Genova told two dozen of us about collecting photographica via eBay. The meeting was held at the Dearborn Historical Society's McFadden-Ross House. Thanks, Tom! Click here for photo coverage.
August 19, 2000 A Family Photo Workshop was held at the Detroit Historical Museum. Past MiPHS President Andee Seeger demonstrated the importance of documenting history through photography.
November 7, 1999 The 28th Annual MiPHS Photographica Trade Show in Novi. It was another successful event with paid attendance of about 300. Lots of old cameras, images, books and other collectibles were bought, sold and traded. To see a few photos of the event, click here.
